Man walks into Walmart at 6am. Then he says he catches ‘floorwalkers’ walking in before him: ‘Trying to blend in as a shopper’
A man who says he's a former “floorwalker” thinks there are more Walmart employees dedicated to asset protection than the average person would see. He also claims that they're there at all hours—even right when Walmart opens up shop.
@bigbagspenny616 posted a video that received more than 373,000 views. In it, he says that floorwalkers show up at sunrise to catch thieves.
“The morning shift is the most tactical deployment of the day. In an empty lot, there's nowhere to hide,” he says.
He films himself entering Walmart in the early morning. Then he claims that two floorwalkers “materialized” to follow him in the store.
In a comment, he writes, “You think these two people just randomly happen to jump out of their car and walk in when I pulled up is just random? Maybe if [it] was regular hours, but look at the lot … You got to read the room.”
Wait, what exactly is a floorwalker?
A floorwalker is a senior employee at a retail store or business who directs customers and supervises people. In recent history, however, the definition has evolved. Most people think of floorwalkers as pseudo-loss prevention—employees in plain clothes who watch customers to ensure they're not stealing products.
A former ‘floorwalker'
A majority of Bigbagspenny's content revolves around Walmart floorwalkers. In multiple videos, the content creator claims that he was once a floorwalker. For that reason, he says he has experience catching them.
“When you go in there, you're not going up against one or two asset protection workers. You're going up against an entire team, and they're stacked up like the FBI,” he says in a recent post. “When you arrive, they're gonna be camped out in secret hiding spots like their car or the vestibule. They also have doors they pop out of all around the store.”
The content creator says that floorwalkers watch every customer—and that they have shifts all throughout the day.
“They're gonna have military-grade equipment, earpieces, walkie-talkies, and even a cameraman. When you're looking at what brand of diaper to buy, the cameraman's zoomed in all the way up close on your face,” he says. “And your floorwalker will come into the aisle with you, and he's gonna act like he's looking at diapers too.”
Is he really catching Walmart's ‘floorwalkers?'
Anecdotally, some people say Walmart has floorwalkers, who specifically work in asset protection. However, it's unclear if every Walmart uses “floorwalkers” in asset protection, or if these alleged accounts are true.
At the very least, there's no evidence that floorwalkers use “military-grade equipment, earpieces, or walkie-talkies.” Most online discussions of floorwalkers specifically say they wear plain clothes, and there isn't any corroborated information to prove that they're decked out.
Bigbagspenny also claims in one video that floorwalkers tried to “tackle him” at the exit. The actual video does not depict anyone approaching him in a manner that would indicate he was about to be tackled.
“Legit walking out of your way is all they doin,” one viewer added.
Not everyone believes what he says
Other commenters agreed that Walmart does have asset protection programs. They just didn't agree with Bigbagspenny's assessment of how often they watch customers and how many employees work in the department.
“I work at Walmart and um we only have 2 idk why they need so many,” one viewer said.
Another commenter added, “I work in [asset protection], and we do not have [expletive] floorwalkers. Take the paranoia down a notch.”
Still, many viewers alleged that floorwalkers are real, and that they're watching customers at high-profit Walmart locations.
