A woman says a flight back from her honeymoon trip resulted in a tense encounter with a stranger.

Caroline Winkler (@frivolous_bish) posted a video that received more than 525,000 views. In it, she describes an incident that occurred during a midnight flight where she accidentally “cheated” on her husband.

As of this writing, Winkler's post has more than 525,000 views.

‘ Something went terribly wrong'

Winkler tells her audience that as she was flying home from her honeymoon, she was “ready for commitment.”

The content creator says her husband, Justin, was sitting in the aisle seat. She sat in the middle seat. A Hawaiian woman was sitting by the window.

She also notes that she was exhausted—it was a red-eye flight that was set to arrive in the wee hours. For that reason, she says she planned to get some shuteye. She took out her contacts, which she says she's blind without, and put on a face mask.

Late in the night, she woke up with a pounding feeling in her chest. Winkler says she felt anxious and needed to use the restroom. She was barely able to see, but she still tried to carefully shift out of her seat so as not to wake up her sleeping husband.

“ Justin's dead asleep, dead to the world,” she says. “I'm not gonna wake him up. I'm just gonna crawl over him. So I do like my straddle, like walking on the arms of the seats, just like do my full straddle over him, give him a little brush of me across the nose.”

She made her way to the restroom in the back of the plane. Afterward, she tried to find her way back to her seat.

Winkler tries to sit down, only to be met with a surprise

Winkler says that she managed to get back to a seat, which she assumed was hers. She quickly tried to sit down again.

But she realized that the woman in the window seat had her legs stretched out. She couldn't sit down.

“I get back to my seat, and I do my straddle again over top of Justin, fully straddled over top of him, and then I realize that the little Hawaiian lady in our row has extended her feet all the way out onto my seat,” she says. “ Like, I'm just standing here awkwardly, like straddling my new husband. And then out of the corner of my eye, I'm looking at that little Hawaiian lady, and out of the corner of my eye I see Justin's expression, and he's like aghast.”

That's when Winkler realized that she wasn't straddling her husband. She was in a completely different row.

“ It's a very old, very scared 85-year-old man who I have been riding saddle style, full straddle, horseback for 10 to 15 seconds,” she says. In her video, she displays just how close they were with her hands.

“He was speechless,” she says. “He couldn't even speak, [and] he didn't know how to make any sense of it. Eventually, I dismounted and, like, just ran trying to find, like, I don't know how to deal with this situation, I'm just gonna run.”

Winkler says she quickly made her way down the aisle again to try and find her seat. Eventually, she found the real Justin and the row she was supposed to be sitting in.

When they landed, she says the 85-year-old man approached her. He seemingly wanted an explanation for why he got straddled mid-flight. Winkler says she pretended to be asleep to avoid the conversation.

Commenters discuss the awkward encounter

Some viewers recommend the content creator bring a pair of glasses with her for contactless moments.

“Glasses!! you need glasses for when the contacts are out,” one viewer said.

Another commenter said, “I'm blind without my contacts too…. As soon as you said you were going to the bathroom, I knew exactly what was going to happen.”

Can flight attendants really help?

Winkler's situation was awkward enough to warrant advice from those in the airline industry. A person who says they're a former flight attendant, for instance, told the content creator to ask for help if needed.

“As a former flight attendant, please come to us in the galley when this happens so we can help you,” they said. “We would probably find it really amusing, but we would also help you find your seat … We're bored so this would be a lovely distraction.”

Alltogether Travel recommends individuals with visual impairments use the call button or notification system if they need assistance traversing the aircraft.  And while needing contacts to see isn't the same as being legally blind, it's worth noting that flight attendants can and will assist passengers who need help finding their seats.

And while many passengers worry about using the call button out of fear of making unreasonable requests, it is there for a purpose—to help facilitate communication when needed.
