Star Wars and Marvel Join Forces in a New “Crossover”

The Avengers and Star Wars heroes in the same story? This scenario, straight out of a fan's dreams, will soon become a reality.

Marvel Comics is preparing Star Wars/Marvel: Hope Assembles, a five-issue limited series that will bring together two of Disney's biggest franchises.

To orchestrate this crossover, Marvel has enlisted Kevin Smith, a well-known enthusiast of both universes. He'll be joined by artist David Marquez, best known for Ultimate Comics: Spider-Man. The story will pit current Marvel characters against—and unite them with—iconic Star Wars figures set during the era of A New Hope.

The timing is particularly well-chosen: the project will coincide with the celebrations surrounding the 50th anniversary of Episode IV.

Marvel isn't presenting this adventure as just another alternate-universe story. Hope Assembles will take place directly on Earth-616, the main universe of Marvel comics.

This is a surprising decision, given that Star Wars already exists there as a work of fiction. Kevin Smith will therefore have to find a way to explain this paradox while bringing together superheroes, Jedi, and Sith in a single adventure.

The first installment will be available in January 2027, and pre-orders are already open.

The idea has been in the works for 40 years

Kevin Smith is thus fulfilling a true childhood dream. In the 1980s, the writer subscribed to Marvel's Star Wars comics and was already imagining Spider-Man or Dr. Doom showing up in the adventures of Luke, Leia, and Han Solo.

“In the early '80s, I subscribed to Marvel's Star Wars comics. And even though I loved following the adventures of Luke, Leia, and Han, I always dreamed that Spider-Man or Dr. Doom might make an appearance in their film saga. So when the opportunity arose to tell this story, no one had to twist my arm! I'm thrilled to be writing Hope Assembles for the 50th anniversary of Star Wars! A huge thank you to Marvel Comics and Lucasfilm for trusting me to pilot the Millennium Falcon and the Quinjet,” said Kevin Smith following the announcement.

50 years… time flies!

Fifty years already… time flies! When it was released in 1977, Star Wars completely revolutionized the film industry and popular culture.

What was meant to be a bold gamble by George Lucas turned into a true global phenomenon. Luke Skywalker, Darth Vader, Princess Leia, Han Solo, and the famous lightsabers quickly became icons that transcended the big screen. The coming months are shaping up to be particularly busy for Marvel. Following the recent release of Spider-Man: Brand New Day, the momentum certainly won't slow down.

All eyes will now turn to Avengers: Doomsday, one of the most anticipated projects in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. At the same time, the studio is already laying the groundwork for Avengers: Secret Wars, which promises to take the concept of the multiverse even further and bring together several iconic characters.

Added to this is the upcoming release of Star Wars/Marvel: Hope Assembles, a crossover that will allow Marvel to explore an entirely new playground.

Spanning both film and comics, the company plans to ramp up major events and keep its fans well entertained. A pivotal period is beginning for the future of this vast universe.
