Supercars represent the most exclusive folly of motor vehicles, designed for speed. The price of these beauties is not surprising considering the exclusivity and advanced technology that comes with these expensive vehicles. Not to mention the fact that the vast majority of these cars increase in value over time. With that in mind, here are the 10 most expensive supercars you can currently buy. All prices listed are in US dollars.

10. Bugatti Mistral - $5 million

The French brand ranks four cars in this list. These cars are rare and fast. Bugatti has had the privilege of holding the speed record title a few times, the first one dating back to the Type 57 Atlantic of the 1930s. The Bugatti Chiron is the current Bugatti hypercar and the basis for many special edition variants. The latest of these is the Bugatti Mistral, worth $5 million. The company has planned only 99 examples of this roadster equipped with the 8.0-liter quad-turbo W-16. In this case, the power is 1,577 horsepower and 1,180 pound-feet of torque.

9. Pagani Huayra Imola - $5.4 million

Launched in 2020 by the Italian automaker, the Pagani Huayra Imola is the closest road version to the Huayra R. Underneath its radically styled carbon fiber body is a twin-turbocharged 6-liter AMG V12 that produces 827 horsepower and 811 pound-feet of torque. At 1,050 kg, it is as light as the track-only Huayra R. The car is named after the famous Italian circuit of Imola. Only five production versions and one prototype were built, each costing $5.4 million.

8. Bugatti Divo - $5.8 million

The Bugatti Divo was released in 2019 as a tribute to the French driver, Albert Divo, who raced for Bugatti in the 1920s, winning the Targa Florio. The Divo was based on the Chiron but featured design elements inspired by the Type 57SC Atlantic. It was 35 kg lighter and its bodywork was modified to improve aerodynamics and grip. The result is better lateral acceleration and the Divo is faster than the Chiron on the track. The W-16 retained the 1,479 horsepower and 1,180 pound-feet of torque of the base car. Only 40 Bugatti Divos were built, each costing $5.8 million.

7. Pagani Codalunga - $7.4 million

In 2022, automaker Pagani decided to celebrate the race cars of yesteryear, like the Porsche 917, by introducing a long-tail version of the Huayra. It's called the Codalunga (long tail in Italian). There are only five examples of this car, sold at a price of 7.4 million US dollars each. The engine is the famous 6.0-liter twin-turbo AMG V12. Here, it develops 840 horsepower and 811 pound-feet of torque. As with all versions of the Huayra, power is sent to the rear wheels only through a seven-speed sequential transmission.

6. Maybach Exelero - $8.0 million

The 2004 Maybach Exelero is the most GT-oriented supercar on the list. The car was commissioned by Fulda, a subsidiary of Goodyear, to test high performance tires. The basis for the Exelero was a 57 Maybach, with roots going back to the W140 S-Class. Power came from a Maybach-built, twin-turbocharged 5.9-liter V12 with 690 horsepower and 752 pound-feet of torque. The car could reach a speed of 351 km/h. This unique example made an appearance in a Jay-Z music video. According to Top Gear, in 2011, rapper Birdman bought the car for $8 million.

5. Mercedes CLK GTR - $8.5 million

In 1997, Mercedes and AMG had to homologate a race car for the FIA GT Championship in only 128 days. Miraculously, they managed this feat and, in accordance with FIA requirements, 25 road models had to be built. In the end, 20 coupes and 5 roadsters of the road version were built. Power came from an M297 V-12 engine, ranging from 6.8 to 7.3 liters, depending on the version, with horsepower ranging from 604 to 711 and 539 to 580 pound-feet of torque. Today, an immaculate example is estimated to fetch $8.5 million.

4. Bugatti Centodieci - $9.0 million

In 2022, Bugatti celebrated 110 years of its founding with a Chiron-based model inspired by Romano Artioli's 1991 Bugatti EB110. The 1990's models commemorated Ettore Bugatti's 110th birthday, hence the neo-retro design of the 2022 Centodieci. Centodieci means 110 in Italian, but only 10 examples were planned by Bugatti, each priced at $9 million. The quad-turbo W-16 makes 1,578 horsepower and 1,180 pound-feet. 0-60 mph (97 km/h) is handled in 2.3 seconds.

3. Bugatti La Voiture Noire - $13.4 million

The 2021 Bugatti La Voiture Noire is the most expensive Bugatti ever made. The Chiron-based model is heavily inspired by Jean Bugatti's Type 57 SC Atlantic (pictured). While the 8.0-liter W-16 is still positioned behind the driver, the car has almost front-engine proportions. Power output remains the same as the Chiron, at 1,479 horsepower and 1,180 pound-feet of torque. Like the 1930s model, it has six exhaust tips. While the exquisite neo-retro styling is enough to drive up the price, what really makes the difference is exclusivity. There is only one La Voiture Noire, and it costs $13.4 million.

2. SP Automotive Chaos - $14.4 million

One of the most expensive and radically styled supercars comes from Greece. The SP Automotive Chaos would be the first "ultra" car. The car was supposed to be unveiled at the 2021 Geneva Motor Show, but the pandemic ruined many plans. Nevertheless, the Greek high-performance car is supposed to feature many game-changing engineering decisions and a 4.0-liter V-10 with up to 3,000 horsepower. Figures such as a 0-60 mph (97 km/h) time of 1.8 seconds and a top speed of 310 mph (500 km/h) are cited for the top-of-the-line version that will cost $14.4 million. A 2,000 horsepower version will also be available for "only" $6.4 million.

1. McLaren F1 - $20.5 million

Gordon Murray's original vision for the ultimate road car was born over 20 years ago and to this day is revered as the greatest high performance vehicle ever built. It also holds the record for the fastest naturally aspirated car in the world for 20 years. BMW's 6.1-liter V12 develops 618 horsepower and 479 pound-feet of torque. Everything has been calculated to perfection, which is why the seemingly disappointing numbers resulted in a top speed of 391 km/h. The last time one of the 106 cars was sold at auction, it fetched $20.5 million.
