I was first introduced to the idea of ancient machines as a teen while reading the Percy Jackson and the Heroes of Olympus books. I wondered what the Archimedes Sphere might look like, if I could see one of these devices. And that’s where my knowledge of ancient technology ended. I received my degree in computer science, but had never heard about the device that lay at the bottom of the Mediterranean. The Antikythera Mechanism was too much of a puzzle to ignore, with more gears than I can shake a stick at! Researchers were able to piece together a functioning model from the 82 fragments and determine what the machine was used for. It’s far more impressive than I think people would believe an Ancient Greek device could be.
