When I look at one of a museum’s most famous objects displayed elegantly in a glass case, I always assume it was elegant from the get-go. My own existence has been characterized by chipped mugs and questionable choices. As it turns out, the Rosetta Stone had a similarly unseemly history. It was smashed, encased in a fort wall, stolen as booty, painted with propaganda, hidden underground twice (on separate occasions, mind you), and only then did someone decide to display it in a glass case. Find out how the Rosetta Stone led a rougher, less polished existence than we might have assumed.
