Trump wants Ukraine’s mineral resources

While uncertainty hovered over Donald Trump’s position regarding aid to Ukraine upon his return to the White House, he now seems to be in favor of maintaining it in the face of the Russian offensive. 

However, he is considering support under conditions, with a particular interest in certain resources in exchange.

According to Reuters, Volodymyr Zelensky stated that Ukraine was willing to welcome investments from American companies as part of the “Victory Plan,” which he personally submitted to Donald Trump shortly before his election.

The Ukrainian president emphasized the importance of Ukraine’s victory and the necessity to secure these resources to prevent them from falling into the hands of Russia.

This plan would offer the United States a privileged agreement in exchange for financing and protecting Ukrainian territory, allowing them to exploit deposits of strategic minerals, including uranium, titanium, graphite, and lithium.

Ukraine, which is estimated to hold over 5% of the world’s mineral reserves, believes that these resources are worth several trillion dollars.

While many hoped that Trump would end the war in Ukraine as soon as he took office, his plan remains unclear. 

From now on, attention is focused on this strategic agreement with the United States and its real impact in bringing an end to the conflict.

Since the Russian invasion in February 2022, the war in Ukraine has caused a heavy human toll and massive destruction. 

Estimates vary, but the total number of casualties, including military and civilians, could reach one million dead or wounded. 

The war has caused the displacement of millions of people, the destruction of essential infrastructure, and a large-scale humanitarian crisis. The Ukrainian president hopes that this agreement, if realized, will be a breakthrough towards peace.
