‘When does it end?’: Chicago woman gets on the train. Then she catches a 35-year-old man in business attire half-swiping
It's a rough world out there. You could be a grown man, taking care of private business within the safe confines of your phone screen, oblivious to the world. And a stranger may well be monitoring your most embarrassing moment.
One Chicago woman documented herself seeing a fellow train passenger do something she deemed undesirable. And now she's sharing it with the world.
‘Just Saw a 35 Year Old Half-Swipe in His Business Attire'
A content creator (@crummyeats) shares footage of an eventful train ride in Chicago. Her video has since accumulated more than 244,000 views.
The video begins with the creator pointing the camera directly at herself as she sits in a moving train. Her head is turned to the side as she looks at another passenger's phone. The other passenger is engaging with a Snapchat notification. Text that overlays the video says, “Just saw a 35 year old [half-swipe] in his business attire.”
The creator rubs her temple in apparent exhaustion and looks at the camera with a disgusted expression on her face. The text on the screen changes to, “When does it end?”
‘I Audibly Gasped'
The creator's viewers flocked to her comment section to share in her despair, with one viewer saying, “They all play games all the time.”
Another viewer expressed surprise that “people still use Snapchat.”
“It never ends,” a viewer said. Another wrote, “Omg … the horror!”
“This is it,” one commented. “Quite literally what the human experience is.”
“I audibly gasped,” another said.
What Does ‘Half-Swiping' Mean?
In contemporary online vernacular, a “half swipe” is a method of reading a Snapchat message without letting the sender know. This circumvents Snapchat's usual feature of immediately indicating when the other party reads your message.
Dexerto explains that in order to “half swipe,” users go to the Chat tab and press and hold the sender's profile icon without opening the conversation. They then slowly drag to the right while still holding, read the message, and drag back before letting go.
“You can use the half swipe (also called a half slide) trick to preview a message without actually opening it, thereby not triggering a ‘read' notification to the sender,” Dexerto says. “This trick only works for reading messages; you can't view Snaps with a half swipe. It's also important to note that the half swipe is not an official feature, so it may stop working at any time with future app updates.”
Distractify confirms that the half swipe was “unintentionally designed into the platform.” The publication, however, notes that Snapchat changed half-swiping “so that the sender would be notified even if a user opened a message using the half-swipe method,” in 2021.
The ick, then, may come from expecting the ploy to still work in 2026.
