Woman buys new Scotch packing tape. She realizes it can’t do the one job it’s supposed to: ‘Everything is trash now’

Most consumers expect the products they purchase to work. However, for one woman, that simply wasn't the case.

In a video that received more than 478,000 views, Percy (@percybear) called out Scotch tape for its product quality. The content creator said she purchased a $7 roll of tape, only for it to not stick to “anything” when she tried using it.

Now, she says she is “done with companies making awful products.”

What's wrong with this Scotch tape?

In Percy's video, the content creator called out an apparent issue with her Scotch Tape. She brandished a brand new roll of tape, which she tried to apply to a cardboard box in order to close it. Except it didn't stick the way she expected.

“Are we really at the point where products are so bad that packing tape does not work?” Percy asked. “Hey, Scotch packing tape, why aren't you sticking to my boxes? Why aren't you sticking to anything? This is the roll I bought for $7, and it's not sticking to anything. How is this acceptable? It doesn't stick to the box.”

She told her audience that in order to get the tape to actually function, she had to intricately apply the tape. Percy then pointed to a cross-shape that she taped onto a cardboard box.

“I  had to do, like, a cross here because it's not sticking to the box. Like, look at that. I just applied that. How do you make a product this awful?” she said.

Commenters Joke About the Product Quality

Viewers had jokes about Percy's dilemma, including a few that took aim at the general propensity for products to simply not work.

“You forgot to activate your Scotch underside tape glue subscription for $4.99 per month on the 3M-Scotch mobile app,” a viewer joked.

Another commenter added, “And this is a company that MAKES TAPE FOR A LIVING. Do better.”

A third commenter said, “Listen Fam, we need to start returning stuff. If it sucks, return it.”

Has Scotch Tape Gotten Worse?

Another commenter pointed out an apparent, alleged issue with the tape.

“Well, in order to sell their ‘heavy duty' version for $3 more, they had to make their normal tape useless,” they said.

But have other people had similar issues with Scotch tape?

Percy was using Scotch Packaging Tape, General Purpose. Online, reviewers say that the packaging tape used to be better. In recent years, though, it's received a number of negative reviews.

“Wow, I have been using Scotch Packaging Tape for years, but now the quality has seriously declined,” one reviewer, who presumably purchased the tape from Costco, said. “Wimpy tape. Scotch used to be a superior brand, and now they're not. Might as well buy generic packing tape next time because Scotch is no longer worth the higher price. Disappointing.”

Even positive reviews of the packaging tape stated it could be “higher-quality.”

“What a [disappointment],” a second reviewer said. “Scotch brand tape used to be a brand to trust. Not anymore. This packaging tape is extremely thin. It breaks very easily.”

It's unclear if Scotch changed anything regarding its adhesive chemistry or the formulation of its products. Many viewers, however, recommended switching to heavier-duty packaging tapes for moves. Scotch itself has a Box Lock 1.88 in. x 54.6 yd. Packaging Tape, which is specifically created for moves.

Still, viewers were not happy about the fact that regular tape seemingly no longer makes the cut.
