Woman gets quoted $200 for cake. Then she goes to Walmart, gets the same thing for $33: ‘It was really good’
Cakes are essential for different events, and no birthday is complete without one. However, with prices so high everywhere, affordability is an important ingredient for finding the perfect confection.
One woman unveiled how Walmart understood the assignment for her daughter's birthday cake for a reasonable price.
Walmart cake reveal
Behind the camera, California-based TikTok creator Tiny (@tinytottss) films a Walmart bakery associate holding a cake in a cardboard box.
When the associate opens the flap, she reveals her custom chocolate heart-shaped cake with brown borders and a white center that reads “Pretty In Pucci” to her and her 3.3 million viewers.
“So pretty! Oh my God, they nailed it,” she gushes happily. “That's exactly how I wanted.”
Essentially, the content creator scored her aesthetic preference cake, while simultaneously saving money.
“I got quoted $200+ from 3 different bakers & went to Walmart & got the same thing for $33,” Tiny praises in the text overlay. “Thannnnngya.”
Viewers sang their praises
It seems Tiny wasn't alone in opting for Walmart cakes. In the comments, those who go this route posted photos of lovely cakes their local Walmart has created for different events.
“My grandma got my daughter's cake from Walmart. I was SHOCKED it was so pretty,” one viewer commented.
“My mom's cake! WALMART EATS DOWN,” another praised.
“I get my son's cake from Walmart every year!” a third stated.
Meanwhile, others entered the chat, recalling their similar experiences.
“Talked to THREE different people for my wedding cake. Cheapest quote was $690 FOR A CAKE. Got a 3 tier cake from walmart for $65. Tasted amazingggg. Got so many compliments on it,” one commenter recounted.
“Hear me out. I used a local baker and not only did I have to either pay extra for delivery or pick it up at some obscure time, I paid $250 and it wasn't even good. I needed a cake last minute for a bday at work. Walmart came in clutch, tasted so much better, and was $30,” a second shared.
Why are Walmart bakeries cheaper than local?
It all boils down to the company's business model, which makes it more affordable. Unlike local bakeries, where the desserts and confections are baked in-house from scratch, Walmart's (and many other grocery chains) aren't.
According to Tasting Table, the retailer mass-produces the cakes in a facility in white, yellow, and chocolate flavors, and they arrive frozen. The only component made in-house is decorating the cake.
To keep prices low, the company relies on mass production and connections to suppliers. On the other hand, local and independent bakers use their own money to pay for ingredients and charge for their labor to earn a profit.
Before you order a custom cake, a spokesperson recommends communicating with the associates and showing in detail the concept you want executed.
“The best way for customers to get exactly what they want is to browse designs ahead of time on Walmart.com or check out the cake decorating book in-store,” they told the Tasting Table. “If there's a specific vision that's not in the book, our Walmart cake decorators love getting creative. Providing an inspiration picture can also help bring your dream cake to life.”
