Woman notices Delta seatmate going live streaming to 6 people mid-flight. So, she decides to join it

Generally, plane rides are a masterclass in strangers ignoring each other for several hours. But every so often, someone breaks that unspoken rule in the funniest way possible. 

One flier says she couldn't resist doing exactly that to a man sitting in front of her.

‘He has no idea I'm right behind him'

Content creator Becky (@messybecky) shared footage of what happened after she noticed a fellow Delta passenger live streaming mid-flight. Her clip has since accumulated more than 3.2 million views.

The video began with Becky filming from her point of view, pointing her camera at a man sitting in front of and across the aisle from her on the plane. The man had his phone propped up in front of him on the folding tray, and appeared to be live streaming.

Becky then flipped the camera to face herself, giggling. In text overlaying her video, she wrote, “This guy on my Delta flight is live streaming to [six] people, and I just joined as a guest, and he has no idea I'm right behind him [laughing emojis].”

In a follow-up video responding to a comment that read, “Wait, request to join the live and then flip your camera to him,” Becky did just that. This second video, which sits at 2.2 million views, shows a screen recording of Becky delightedly laughing and sharing the screen with the live streamer Papalavi (@papalavibusiness).

Papalavi seemed perplexed at first as to who this young woman might be, but then he appeared to realize she was laughing because she was visibly in an airplane seat. He began to laugh as well, turned around to see her in the same plane as him, and laughed even harder. Papalavi picked up his phone and moved it to get her in the same frame as his live, showing his viewers how close she was sitting to him. He waved at Becky and her friend sitting next to her. “That's funny,” he told Becky, chuckling.

Do planes actually allow you to live stream?

Commenters absolutely loved Becky and Papalavi's exchange, leaving glowing comments under her videos. Many called the interaction “so cute and silly” and emblematic of “genuinely good human connection,” praising Papalavi for being “a good sport.” But are live streams technically allowed on planes?

Well, the rules depend on the difference between a live, two-way call and a one-way broadcast like a live stream. According to AOL, passengers can't use cell phones to make calls over a cellular network while a plane is airborne, as per FCC regulations. This is why flight attendants tell passengers to switch to airplane mode.

However, that rule is specifically about cellular voice calls, not about using an airline's onboard Wi-Fi. Crucially, neither Becky nor Papalavi appeared to be speaking throughout the live stream, so there was no running commentary with which to disrupt passengers' flight experience.

Delta specifically bans voice and video calls placed over its in-flight Wi-Fi as a matter of company policy, not federal law: Delta's own terms state that “voice service is not permitted nor supported.” The airline said in a public 2013 statement that it won't allow onboard voice calls even if regulators loosen restrictions, citing feedback from passengers and flight crews who don't want to sit near people chatting on the phone.

According to NBC News, one FAA spokesperson explained airlines block voice-calling apps like Skype “not because of an FAA restriction, but because the carriers are ‘simply responding to the overwhelming majority of their customers, who prefer silent communications.'”
