Woman realizes prescription Kylie Jenner Meta glasses from LensCrafters won’t come with diamond detail. Then a Best Buy worker shares a workaround
Meta has released a new iteration of its smart glasses, the AI-powered “Meta Starfire Kylie Edition” in collaboration with Kylie Jenner.
While Meta's smart glasses have long since courted controversy — most notably and recently, for various invasions of privacy — this new collab has consumers running to get their own pair. But as it turns out, it's impossible to get prescription lenses with the glasses and the characteristic rhinestone inlay.
Purchasing Meta glasses with a prescription
Content creator Tanu (@50shadesoftanu) posted a conversation she'd filmed herself having with a Best Buy employee. The video has more than 400,000 views.
“One question I did have was — LensCrafter couldn't answer it — but … if I want prescription in the Kylie ones, they said they'll have to switch out the lenses,” Tanu said. After the employee replied in the affirmative, she continued, “And you lose the diamond part of that, or how does that work?”
Tanu was referring to the feature of the Meta Starfires that sets them apart from other Meta smart glasses: A small diamond-like gem set in the actual right-hand lens of the glasses. Since only Meta inlays the gem, Tanu worried that going to a third party for her prescription would logically result in her getting gemless lenses.
The Best Buy employee confirmed that most third parties will keep the original Meta lenses and switch them out for non-rhinestoned prescription lenses. He also said that Best Buy “[doesn't] do the prescription part here” because they're “not certified for that.” However, he proposed a workaround for Tanu.
“You can go directly through the Meta website, insert your prescription if you have it, and then it should be able to send you the glasses, fully made from Meta there, with the prescription,” the employee said. Tanu responded, “Oh, you're so smart … I didn't even think about that … Problem solved!”
@50shadesoftanu LensCrafters was offering 50% off the lenses tho I think going the Meta route seems the safest for prescription glasses?!?!?!!! @LensCrafters @Kylie Jenner @Meta #meta #glasses #prescriptionglassses #bestbuy #metaglasses ♬ original sound – Jared
Was Tanu able to get the glasses with the inlay?
As it turns out, the Best Buy employee's “hack” was misinformed. When purchasing Starfires on Meta's website, the “Prescription” section reveals that it's not possible to get the gem and a prescription.
“Gem detail on the lens not included with prescription lenses,” small-font text reads next to an asterisk under “prescription.”
One viewer commented under Tanu's video with a screenshot of this very information on Meta's website, writing, “Still no diamond it states it on the site.” Tanu “liked” the comment and replied, “Wait so helpful,” with a sobbing emoji.
“Because putting a small gem on a prescription lens can possibly cause issues with vision,” another viewer commented in response. “I'm assuming a lot of… y'all never had a scratch or small crack and your prescription lenses… people with super high or super sensitive prescription. Have issues seen clearly incorrectly due to that, couldn't imagine paying extra to mess up my [vision].”
Tanu wasn't alone in her unfamiliarity with Meta's gem policies. Another viewer expressed her distress at not knowing she wouldn't be getting the glasses she planned for.
“I'm sooo sad I wanna cancel,” the viewer commented. “Mine didn't say that [when] I ordered on the meta site.”
Some viewers were critical of Tanu's choice to seek out the glasses, echoing the wider backlash against Kylie Jenner. One person wondered “why … we need meta glasses” in the first place.
“You definitely seem like exactly the type of person who would use meta glasses,” one viewer wrote.
“Consumerism final boss,” another commented. Tanu replied, “Meta got to me.”
