I come from a long line of superstitious people, and whenever there’s a family situation that calls for it, the elders always seem to have some old belief ready to pull out of their sleeves. I’ve spent a good portion of my life being told not to do oddly specific things for reasons that usually boil down to “because that’s what we’ve always been told” or “just follow it, there’s no harm in doing so.” Naturally, this has made me very interested in finding out who started these things in the first place. Wedding traditions are especially good for that because so many of them look sweet and romantic today, right up until you learn that their origins involved demons, legal contracts, property, or somebody desperately trying to escape a crowd of wedding guests.
