Many Texas Roadhouse customers have noticed one particular aspect of the service that attracts attention. Specifically, at Texas Roadhouse locations across the United States, employees have to bust out dance moves, which occur every hour.

A Reddit user theorized that there's a calculated reason for the rigorous dance schedule for servers. They posted their idea online to seek additional input.

‘It has nothing to do with entertainment

On April 4, Reddit user u/Epsonality posted a Texas Roadhouse theory on r/LowStakesConspiracies, a subreddit dedicated to users posting harmless conspiracy theories free from “any sinister applications.”

“The reason they line dance at Texas Roadhouse is so the cooks can catch up,” the original poster (OP) wrote. “It has nothing to do with entertainment.”

The poster implied that the beloved line dances performed by Texas Roadhouse servers are not an exercise in joy at all, but merely a clever way for restaurants to assuage any concerns of hungry customers whose orders might be backed up in a busy kitchen.

“It keeps everyone complacent for 5 min,” OP continued. “And the cooks don't have any new orders for a bit.”

Another Reddit user commented on OP's post, wondering whether it was “common for them to line dance.”

“I've been to them occasionally and I don't think I've ever seen them do this,” the commenter explained.

OP responded with a tongue-in-cheek continuation of their original theory about which regions Texas Roadhouse employees might frequently line dance.

“The regions where the cooks have trouble keeping up, I guess,” OP wrote.

Harmless theories are all well and good, but what's really going on?

What's the story behind the iconic Texas Roadhouse line dance?

While OP's theory might seem a bit cynical, they aren't completely off the mark. According to Yahoo News, there are several reasons why Texas Roadhouse employees regularly line dance. Customer control is just one of many justifications.

“The first [reason] is to keep the energy high in the restaurant,” Yahoo News wrote. “While the dancing is fun for the guests to watch, some even join in. Another reason is that the dances often help to distract customers who are waiting for their food. This can make it seem as if their steaks (which Texas Roadhouse customers can hand-pick themselves) and sides get to the table in record-breaking time.”

Mike Parratino, the owner of a Texas Roadhouse location in Kansas, told The Wichita Eagle that the tradition is much more about injecting joy into the chain's dining atmosphere.

“We line dance every hour on the half hour,” Parratino said. “It's just something fun for the guests. It's just part of what we do at Texas Roadhouse, have some fun and keep the energy up and guests love it. We pull kids out and they come out and dance and things like that.”

Workers' opinions on the tradition

Texas Roadhouse servers seem to have mixed feelings on the dance. Whether a worker wants to engage in a dance tradition largely comes down to a matter of personal preference.

When one customer called the line dance “annoying” on r/restaurants, a Texas Roadhouse server chimed in via a comment and defended the practice.

“Texas Roadhouse server here. I personally [expletive] love it,” they wrote. “I like dancing naturally, but being able to give my tables a big, and polite of course, ‘[expletive] you' and ignore them for a solid 2 minutes is a good feeling during the busy [expletive] rush.”

Conversely, a different hospitality worker bemoaned the dancing requirement when looking at a Texas Roadhouse opening during a job hunt. Commenters noted it really is up to the individual.

“It's just what you're willing to do I guess,” wrote another commenter. “My cousins both worked at roadhouse in college and made killer money there. They felt the dancing though annoying was worth it.”
