There's nothing quite like the bone-deep horror of putting one's fate in the hands of a hairdresser, only to receive a horrifying cut. Especially after paying a premium.

Now, imagine sharing a haircut horror story on the internet that millions of people watch. Then imagine that the comment section clowns the cut. Well, one woman is going viral for that very experience.

‘You asked for a terrible haircut'

In a video from this year that now has more than 51.3 million views, Edie Ofstedal (@theediearchive on TikTok) filmed herself in her car post-haircut. She showed her audience the haircut she'd asked for, versus the one she actually ended up getting.

“I just got all my hair cut off,” Ofstedal said in her video while hiding half her face. “This is what I asked for.”

Ofstedal then pointed to a picture that appeared on-screen. It was a photo of a female model for Saint Laurent, featuring sleek sunglasses and a silken, fashionable bob. The model's straight-hair bob ended in a perfectly straight line and fell well below her ears. Ofstedal then panned the camera to reveal her head.

While she was also sporting sunglasses and a bob, her hair looked noticeably shorter than that of the reference photo, and her ends were not cut in the same straight line.

Ofstedal clicked her tongue and simply said, “Yeah” before the video ended. The caption of the video pleaded for “short hair salon recs” from her fellow Los Angeles residents. The story, however, doesn't end there.

The internet is all aboard the micro-bob train

Ofstedal's viewers had a ton of fun cracking jokes in her comment section, with one commenter advising her to “lay low for a while” (“The way I haven't left the house yet,” Ofstedal replied with a sobbing emoji).

One viewer asked if she planned to wear wigs, possibly referencing the iconic “When will you wear wigs” prank interview with Elijah Wood. “Bangs in the back, nice,” another person joked. Yet another jokester asked, “What does your hairdresser do for work?” while someone else commented, “It's not that bad. It's worse.”

“Girl sue someone, anyone,” one viewer wrote. “Me, even.”

Some viewers weren't even fans of the original reference photo, much less the results. They dragged Ofstedal for requesting the haircut in the first place, with one person commenting, “Girl you literally got what you asked for.”

“You asked for a terrible haircut,” another wrote. “The hairdresser just took it to the next level.”

Some kinder viewers found a silver lining in the whole ordeal, with one person even advising Ofstedal to wait it out. In two months, her hair would probably grow into the exact style she'd originally wanted.

“She gave you exactly what you wanted just a couple months early,” they commented.

“She gave you something to look forward to,” another said.

Ultimately, Ofstedal took the haircut in stride and with good humor. Her page has since been populated with an ongoing series of videos featuring her experimenting with different styles and accessories to make her hair pop, and she has reported that “the bob is finally cooperating.”

Ofstedal's response to the viral video

In an email to Buzz News, Ofstedal said she “definitely didn't expect the micro-bob video to take off.” At the time of posting, she had only four followers.

“I posted it on a whim and … I thought a few people might relate to the experience of getting a bad haircut,” Ofstedal wrote. “Instead, it turned into this huge internet moment with millions of views and comments from people who were very emotionally invested in my hair. At first I was a little shocked by the attention, but it's been a positive and ultimately funny experience. I've been introduced to a much larger audience than I ever expected, and it's opened up opportunities I definitely didn't anticipate, including connecting with brands and leaning more into content creation … people really respond to authenticity online.”

Micro-bob 101: How to style, inspo, and more

What is a micro-bob, anyway? Why get one, and how do you style it? Fear not: Experts have offered top-tier micro-bob advice and made it readily available online.

Hair blog The Right Hairstyles defines a micro-bob as an “edgy and super sassy” version of the classic bob which “sits between the cheekbone and chin length and is one of the best hairstyles to accentuate your facial bone structure.” Bob enthusiasts can choose to add wispy bangs to make the haircut a French bob; There's also balayage dye jobs for color and layering for those who have really thick hair. There are a million things that anyone can do with their bob.

Hair experts recommend maintaining your natural hair texture and tailoring the cut to fit that texture. This allows individuals with the hairstyle to maintain their normal haircare regimen while still having a chic mega-short cut.
