‘Blame the store’: Man goes to Walmart self-checkout. Then he starts scanning a whole cartload of groceries, creating a blockade
From antisocial behavior to online content creators terrorizing the general public with non-funny pranks, the once-peaceful grocery store has become a center of chaos. And one man is going viral for calling out a new flavor of bizarre grocery shopping behavior at his local Walmart.
‘Get out of the way!'
TikTok creator Deth93_ (@deth93_ ) posted a video that has more than 2,300 views. In it, he described “a scene” he witnessed.
“This dude comes up to the self-checkout with a full cart of groceries—all right, whatever,” the creator said in his video. “Starts scanning them and then putting them in the little bagging area.”
But then, after scanning all his items and paying for them, the creator said the customer put all of his unbagged items back in his shopping cart.
“And I'm like, ‘What the [expletive] is this guy doing?'” the creator recalled. “It's like, I don't know, maybe he wants to save the turtles or whatever, you know? No using plastic.”
Apparently, rather than using the appointed bagging area to bag his groceries, he started individually bagging them in his cart. The problem? His cart was “blocking the only other self-checkout” kiosk.
“Get out of the way!” the creator shouted at the camera while finishing his video. His viewers echoed his frustration in the comment section, bemoaning the “odd” and “oblivious” behavior of self-checkout customers, which often results in “traffic jams.”
“Oh man i would have lost my mind,” wrote one commenter. “I've gone to self checkout with a full cart many times but I bag as im scanning and im pretty quick cuz ive worked in a few stores in my life. I just know most workers cant bag items to save their lives.”
How to not build a grocery blockade at Walmart
While this customer clearly had his own agenda, others don't. There is technically a correct way to self-checkout of grocery stores like Walmart. Hence, some folks online have created bona fide guides to help shoppers conduct themselves.
Family finance YouTube channel Smart Family Money, run by Cindy Scott, posted a video in 2024 titled ‘How to Use Walmart Self Checkout: An Easy Guide.' The video, which has more than 47,000 views, explained the process step-by-step and didn't leave room for any “blockading.”
Scott's video said that once you have all your groceries and are at self-checkout, all you need to do to begin the process is simply scan your first item.
“You can use the flat scanner on the register and just slide the barcode over the screen, or you can use the hand scanner and you're gonna pull the trigger when you're pointing it out the barcode,” Scott said. “Either way works, so whichever one is easier for you. After you scan each item, put it in a bag or set it down in the bagging area. It does have a scale and it is making sure that you are putting all the items over there.”
After scanning everything, customers simply have to click “Pay now,” and select their payment method: Walmart Pay, credit card, debit card, cash and coins are accepted. Customers can mix and match payment methods by inserting cash first and then paying the remainder of the sum with a card. Apple Pay and Google Pay are the only exceptions for mixed payment method purchases. Once a customer has paid, they'll be able to select their receipt method.
