A trip to Target became an unexpected lesson for a sibling pair. That's because a man spotted his sister making a worrying mistake. Instead of pointing it out, however, he decided to play a prank on her.

What happened at Target?

TikToker Azaryah James (@aj_dietz9) shared a viral video that has more than 613,000 views. In it, he pranked his sister outside of a Target.

According to Azaryah, he stopped by the store to return an item. While there, he said he saw his sister and located her car in the parking lot. Azaryah claimed his sister had recently gotten her driver's license. He also said she was forgetful.

When he checked the car, he said it was unlocked. Making matters worse, the keys were still in the ignition.

Instead of calling her right away, he decided to prank her. He locked the car, then took the keys and hid nearby.

In his video, his sister walked back to the car with her friend. She appeared confused when she reached the vehicle, and unsure why she could not get inside. Her brother then revealed himself. He showed her the keys. He also told her she needed to be more careful.

His sister quickly tried to defend herself. She insisted it was the first time she had ever made that mistake.

Do people think she made a serious mistake?

Many viewers said the situation was concerning.

“As a mother, this would be an immediate no car for 2 months. She's not ready to be in charge of something that important,” one commenter wrote.

Others agreed that leaving a car unlocked with the keys inside could have ended much worse.

Some people also shared their own experiences. “I accidentally left my keys in the car, while going to Target. I somehow left them on the seat. Never again. I go to open the door and see the keys on the seat and my heart dropped and was relieved at the same time,” confessed another user.

Is it illegal to leave your keys in the car?

It depends on the location. Many U.S. states have “unattended vehicle” laws that require drivers to remove the key before leaving a vehicle. For example, New York law states that a driver may not leave a vehicle unattended without stopping the engine, locking the ignition, and removing the key.

Regardless of the legal requirements, the U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration recommends travelers take their keys with them and lock the vehicle when they park.

Why were some viewers more concerned about the video?

Not everyone focused on the driving mistake.

Some viewers felt the bigger issue was how much personal information Azaryah shared online.

“Now I know where your sister frequents, what her car looks like, and that she leaves her car unlocked with the keys inside enough that you knew to check. this is such an unsafe thing to post,” wrote a concerned commenter.

Others agreed that viral videos can reveal more information than creators realize. A familiar shopping location, a recognizable vehicle, or details from a social media profile can sometimes be pieced together by strangers.

While there is no suggestion this video placed anyone in immediate danger, cybersecurity and law enforcement experts have warned that small details shared online can add up.

Videos that reveal where someone regularly shops, what vehicle they drive, or patterns in their daily routine can provide information that strangers could misuse. For that reason, many experts recommend avoiding posts that disclose routines, locations, or other identifying details whenever possible.

What can people take away from the debate?

Azaryah's video started as a family prank. It quickly became a wider conversation about safe driving habits and online privacy.

Many viewers agreed that leaving keys in an unattended car is a mistake worth correcting. Yet, others argued that posting details about a loved one's habits and whereabouts for millions of people to see can create a different kind of safety risk.

The discussion ultimately became about more than the prank itself. It raised questions about both real-world responsibility and what people choose to share online.
