One of the world’s most iconic board games is about to become a real-life competition with millions of dollars on the line. Netflix is inviting contestants to step inside a life-sized version of Monopoly, where strategy, negotiation and calculated risks will determine who claims an enormous cash prize. The ambitious new series marks another major expansion of the streaming platform’s growing slate of high-profile reality competitions.
Monopoly Heads to Netflix
One of the world’s most famous board games is officially becoming a reality competition. Netflix has announced Monopoly, a new unscripted series that will transform the classic property-trading game into a life-sized contest where strategy, negotiation and calculated risk will determine who walks away with a massive cash prize.
A $2 Million Prize
The competition will feature 12 contestants battling for a grand prize of $2 million. Throughout the series, players will compete inside an immersive Monopoly Town Square, where they must earn money, acquire properties, negotiate deals and avoid bankruptcy to remain in the game.
Netflix's Announcement
Introducing the series, Netflix said: «If you’ve ever pictured yourself as a real estate mogul with a hotel on Marvin Gardens, three houses on St. James Place, and an Electric Company to your name, have we got a game for you. Netflix is bringing the world of Monopoly to life in a new competition series in which 12 players will compete for a $2 million prize.*»
Life-Size Monopoly
According to Netflix, contestants will be immersed in a fully recreated Monopoly Town Square where traditional game mechanics become real-life challenges. Players will buy properties, negotiate with rivals and attempt to build their fortunes while avoiding elimination as competitors are declared bankrupt one by one.
Only One Winner
The streaming platform explained that the competition will continue until only one contestant remains. As Netflix described it: «Contestants will be immersed in a life-size Monopoly Town Square where they’ll have the opportunity to earn money, buy properties, negotiate deals, and hopefully stay out of jail. (No word if winning second prize in a beauty contest will still earn $10.) One by one, bankrupt players will be eliminated while others build their empire — until the one person left standing takes it all.»
Casting Is Underway
Applications are now open for legal U.S. residents who are at least 21 years old and possess a valid passport. Netflix is inviting fans to compete for one of the 12 available spots, giving ordinary players the opportunity to participate in what will be one of the platform’s biggest reality competitions.
Coming in 2027
Monopoly is scheduled to premiere in fall 2027. The series joins Netflix’s growing lineup of unscripted adaptations based on well-known entertainment properties, including Wonka’s The Golden Ticket, which is inspired by Roald Dahl’s Charlie and the Chocolate Factory.
Experienced Producers
The competition is being produced by Studio Lambert, the company behind Netflix hits such as Squid Game: The Challenge and The Circle. Executive producers include Gabriel Marano and Zachary Edwin for Hasbro Entertainment, alongside Nia Yemoh, Tim Harcourt, Jack Burgess, Stephen Lambert and Kim Murphy for Studio Lambert.
A Humorous Disclaimer
Netflix ended its announcement with a joke aimed at longtime Monopoly fans. The company noted: «*A get-out-of-jail-free card is not included with the $2 million prize pot.» The playful disclaimer references one of the game’s most recognizable cards while emphasizing the record-breaking prize.
A Global Board Game Icon
Originally patented by Parker Brothers in 1935, Monopoly has sold more than 275 million copies worldwide. The game has remained one of the best-selling board games in history for decades, spawning countless themed editions while earning a reputation for turning friendly family game nights into fiercely competitive battles.
Expanding Netflix's Reality Lineup
The new series continues Netflix’s strategy of adapting globally recognized brands into large-scale competition shows. By combining one of the world’s best-known board games with a $2 million prize and a proven reality television production team, the streaming platform hopes to create another major unscripted hit capable of attracting both longtime Monopoly fans and new audiences.
