There's no denying food prices have become exorbitant. Every time we go to the grocery store, it serves as a reminder.

Vegetables in particular are facing a roller coaster of price fluctuations. While Yahoo reports that fresh vegetables as a whole have dropped 1.6% between June and July, these prices were 6.3% higher in July than last year.

Unfortunately, the numbers don't look promising, with prices predicted to jump 5.9% this year. If you eat broccoli but don't care for the stems, one woman demonstrates a simple yet unorthodox method to score one for cheaper at Walmart.

What did she do with this broccoli at Walmart?

Florida-based TikToker Cheryl (@funnyauntie2) stands in a Walmart produce section, holding a head of broccoli.

“What the f– [does] Walmart think I am?” she asks, beginning to place it in the thin plastic bag. “I'm not paying for this sh–.”

First, she takes the broccoli crown out and checks her surroundings. Then, she holds the bag under her arm and snaps the stalk off.

“You see this sh– right here?” she asks, holding the broken-off stalk. “This sh– costs $5.”

Satisfied, the content creator returns the broccoli head in the plastic bag.

“I just took off $5 of this m—f—ng broccoli,” she adds, spinning the bag and tying the top shut. “I ain't got no m-fu—g money.”

Viewers Virtually Applauded

“Omfg this is amazing. Thx for the tip! I'm tired of getting robbed,” one viewer commented.

“A good idea, thank you for the tip,” a second echoed.

“Thank you boo for teaching me something,” a third agreed.

Moreover, it turned out some had already known this and secretly yanked off this undesirable part of the broccoli.

“I'm glad to see I'm not the only one,” one commenter remarked.

“STOPPPP I do the sameeee lmffffffffaoaoaoaoao,” another stated.

“I take those stems off too and the tomatoes on the vine. The vine staying in the story,” a third added.

Does This Affect the Price?

About a week later, Cheryl decided to prove how effective her hack is. The clip starts with a stalk-stripped broccoli crown on the self-checkout scale at 62 cents.

“I'm tired of talkin bout this broccoli,” she wrote in the on-screen text.

Like clockwork, she ripped the stem off a broccoli crown, but this time, it didn't stay intact. So, she collected the pieces in the bag and headed straight to self-checkout. After she placed it on the scale, the grand total came out to be $1.04.

How Walmart Charges Their Produce

Normally,  the retailer prices produce by count and weight. For example, cucumbers, apples, bell peppers, and avocados are sold individually. During your transaction, you either enter the PLU (Price Look-Up) code on the sticker or search it on the self-checkout screen. From there, you enter the amount, and it gives you a price.

On the other hand, produce like onions, zucchinis, Roma tomatoes, and broccoli receive their final price after it's been counted and weighed. According to Walmart's website, each head of broccoli is $1.72, with a final price of $2.12. Of course, location prices may vary. However, removing the stalk may shave off 40 cents, give or take.
