Most couples like to keep their private affairs exactly as that—private. But sometimes arguments burst into the limelight for unwitting bystanders to see.

Jake (@wake_and.jake) filmed a video that received more than 490,000 views. In it, he captured an argument that happened between a couple at the Denver International Airport. The argument, it seems, attracted the attention of a wide range of people waiting for their flights.

The argument

Jake covertly pulled out his phone while seated and recorded a man and woman who were arguing as they passed him. The woman appeared to try to stop her partner, placing her hands on his chest. He, by contrast, appeared to try to walk away entirely, repeating “please stop touching me” to her.

The woman responded by asking him why he canceled her “[expletive] flight.” Then she repeated the phrase. He tried to continue moving forward, but eventually stopped for a moment to speak with her.

“I told you to stop, and you wouldn't stop,” he said. “I'm not gonna deal with this … on an airplane in the sky. This is insane … so please … let go of me.”

The argument continued, with the couple walking out of Jake's line of sight. Jake was able to record more of the altercation itself, however. The man reiterated that he told her he was going to “leave” her if she didn't stop. Presumably, that's what happened, although it's unclear what exactly he was referring to.

In the description, Jake added more context. “He canceled her flight home after she cheated on him,” he wrote. “Stranded at the Denver Airport.”

Commenters weigh in on the ethics

Many viewers said that if the situation happened exactly as Jake described—that the woman cheated on the man, which was revealed right before a big flight—it was justified to cancel the ticket. They said it was on the woman to purchase her own ticket home.

A viewer added, “[What] do you mean how are you supposed to get home? you buy a ticket…”

Others complimented the man for keeping his cool during the encounter.

“This young man is rational, composed, and made no contact, even with her putting hands on him. He will go far,” they said.

Wait, how did he even cancel the flight?

The comment section generally sided with the man. They said there was no reason for him to take the high road and let her fly. In fact, they all argued he saved himself from future escalating tensions and a potentially worse-off scenario.

But for those who were curious, how did the man even cancel the flight to begin with? The answer is simple. In some circumstances, gate agents will allow customers to cancel flights at the ticket counter. Many airlines offer customers travel credit rather than a full refund in that circumstance.

Delta Air Lines, for instance, states that “A cancellation fee will apply in most cases, unless you've purchased a refundable ticket type or are experiencing a significant schedule change or delay or a flight cancellation. Tickets not changed or canceled prior to departure will have no remaining value.”

By contrast, Southwest Airlines has a more lax cancellation policy. The company states that “All fare types are eligible for cancellations without a fee … Failure to cancel a reservation at least 10 minutes prior to original scheduled departure may result in forfeited travel funds.”

If the man was flying with an airline with a lax cancellation policy, it was very likely he got travel credit or some compensation in return for his partner's seat. That seemingly saved him from the awkward experience of trying to talk through the argument. The cancellation, then, seemed worth it, at least according to Jake's commenters.
