Woman buys bag of Purina One. Then she sees what's waiting for her inside

Nettle Honey (@msnettlehoney) shows her audience a 16.5-pound bag of Purina ONE Small Bites Beef & Rice, some of which she poured into a plastic storage bin prior to filming. In a video with more than 1,400 views, she picks up pieces of kibble on camera and tells Purina it had fooled her again. Why? Because the kibble she bought appeared to have spoiled before she even ripped open the bag.

The story

A red Purina ONE bag fills the frame, the little Boston terrier and all, before she pans out to show some kibble in a plastic bin. A hand pushes down through the pile. Two kinds of kibble sit in the same container: one batch pale and tan, the other darker and dull.

“Okay, Purina, I'm next. You got me,” she says. “What … is this? Again. You got me.”

She never says in the clip what the pieces are, where the lighter kibble ends and the older food begins, or what the exact “You got me” refers to. She only tells her audience she's reached a verdict. Based on her clip, it seems she received spoiled kibble.

‘It's a shipping and storage issue'

Many commenters said they don't believe Purina is at fault. They think it's more about who ships and stores the kibble after it leaves production.

“Just get another bag for free. These things happen; it's called life,” one person said. “Purina [ONE] is still one of the most incredible dog foods on the [market]. Also, you are not supposed to pour the kibble into the plastic container. You're supposed to leave it in the bag inside of the container.”

Another person agreed that it was likely the transportation and storage: “It's a shipping and storage issue. It can happen with any brand of food. This happens when people throw the bags around and end up with micro tears in the bags that you can't see but still allow organisms to get into the bags. This can also happen because people stocking shelves don't take the time to properly rotate big bags of dog food out so that the oldest bags get sold first, so then you get this really old bag that you can buy that hasn't been sold fast enough.”

‘You got me‘

The interesting thing is that it is difficult to know what the issue is and where the blame lies.

In January 2024, the Facebook group Saving Pets One Pet @ A Time became something of an unofficial clearinghouse for owners who blamed the Purina brand for sudden illness. The group's administrator Kelly Bone told NBC News she'd logged 969 reports of sick dogs and cats, 234 of them dead, after noticing “quite a few pets getting sick” in her feed. No recall ever followed.

Purina hasn't moved an inch. Spokesperson Lorie Westhoff told 10 Tampa Bay there was no product issue and that “all of our brands, including Pro Plan, are safe to feed.” The bin in the video is the only evidence Honey's clip offers.
