Flávio Bolsonaro Flees Brazil After Election Defeat Amid Corruption Allegations as Trump Offers U.S. Visas
Flávio Bolsonaro fled Brazil after losing to Lula, despite a court order to surrender his passports amid corruption investigations, as Trump offered U.S. visas and Lula called his departure «shameful».
Flávio Bolsonaro Flees Brazil After Election Defeat
Flávio Bolsonaro fled Brazil following his presidential election defeat to Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, leaving while authorities sought to confiscate his passports amid serious financial investigations. His departure sparked a political controversy after Lula condemned his actions as «shameful» and Donald Trump’s administration announced that Bolsonaro and his family would be offered U.S. visas.
Lula Defeats Bolsonaro in Presidential Runoff
Bolsonaro lost Brazil’s October 25 presidential runoff after Lula secured approximately 51.8% of the vote, winning by nearly 4.4 million ballots. Despite the official results, the right-wing senator initially refused to concede, alleging irregularities involving extended voting hours. Electoral authorities found no evidence establishing fraud sufficient to overturn the outcome, leaving Lula’s victory intact.
Bolsonaro Refuses to Accept His Defeat
Following his defeat, Bolsonaro initially demanded that the election be annulled before shifting his legal challenge toward the disqualification of Lula and Vice President Geraldo Alckmin. He declared: «I wasn’t the one who lost; the system won.» Bolsonaro also announced plans to «organize the opposition to build a fortress against barbarism.»
Corruption and Money Laundering Allegations
Bolsonaro faces two separate Brazilian investigations involving alleged corruption, money laundering and tax evasion. One examines suspicions that a sports betting business helped launder funds connected to fraudulent pension deductions affecting elderly Brazilians. Another concerns alleged payments from a banker, including questions about whether money financed his brother Eduardo’s political activities involving Washington.
Supreme Court Orders Bolsonaro's Passports Seized
Supreme Court Justice Alexandre de Moraes ordered Bolsonaro to surrender both his ordinary and diplomatic passports while the investigations continued. The senator denied wrongdoing and characterized the measure as intimidation. Authorities subsequently sought to enforce the order as Bolsonaro failed to hand over the documents before the deadline, raising questions about his departure.
Bolsonaro Promised He Would Not Flee
Before leaving Brazil, Bolsonaro publicly insisted: «I never thought about leaving the country. I will hand over my passports and I will defend myself from this aberration. It is a clear attempt to intimidate me. But I will not be silenced.» His subsequent departure contrasted sharply with that declaration.
Lula Calls Bolsonaro's Departure «Shameful»
Lula condemned his opponent’s departure during celebrations for his 81st birthday, questioning why Bolsonaro would leave instead of defending himself before Brazilian courts. He declared: «I find myself wondering what kind of guilt weighs on the conscience of a citizen who has just lost an election and flees his own country. What kind of guilt?»
Lula Accuses Bolsonaro of Avoiding Accountability
Lula described the departure as «shameful» and criticized the Bolsonaro family’s relationship with Washington. He accused his opponent of attempting to avoid legal accountability, declaring: «The first is licking American boots. Those who are not liable do not fear. A fellow that secretly leaves his country, that’s because he is liable for something.»
Trump Questions Brazil's Election Results
Trump questioned the outcome of Brazil’s presidential election without presenting evidence that fraud had altered the results. Speaking to reporters after returning from Texas, he declared: «The election was really strange, and I thought it was terrible.» Despite claiming he had not formally endorsed either candidate, Trump expressed sympathy for Bolsonaro and his family.
U.S. Offers Visas to Bolsonaro's Family
A senior State Department official confirmed Washington’s willingness to welcome the defeated candidate, stating: «The State Department will issue visas to Flávio Bolsonaro and his family and allow them entry into the United States.» The announcement followed reports that Bolsonaro traveled with his wife and daughters through Argentina and Ecuador after leaving Brazil.
Bolsonaro's Departure Raises New Legal Questions
Bolsonaro’s departure surprised members of his campaign, while his brother Eduardo, living in Texas, had previously encouraged him to leave if defeated. His father Jair Bolsonaro similarly traveled to Florida after losing in 2022. With financial investigations unresolved, Lula demanding accountability and Washington offering visas, his political future remains uncertain.
