Arizona woman works in ‘script’ club. Then she tells her audience the do’s and don’ts when visiting
Every subculture has its quirks, cultural contexts and expectations. As such, when getting into a new hobby or pastime, it can be tough to know what's taboo and what's a norm in any given space.
People foraying into the world of nightlife can be just as lost in terms of what they should or shouldn't do. So one nightlife dancer posted a video setting the record straight.
‘Try being a little bit more respectful'
Violet Stormy (@violetstormy) posted a video that has more than 2,000 views giving etiquette advice to nightlife patrons in her capacity as a professional dancer. She used the phrase “script club” as a euphemism for a nightlife venue with dancers.
“One of the biggest beefs I have with customers that come in is they treat the script club like any regular shmegular dive bar,” Stormy said. “And they're like, ‘Oh, I'm just here to drink and watch the show.' Y'all, the show's not free … Dancers pay to work. We are tip-based entirely. And not only that, but we gotta tip everyone out as well at the end of our shift … If you want to just sit and watch a show and drink, go to the dive bar.”
Stormy made it clear that chump change wouldn't cut it for these tips.
“[Customers will] be like, ‘Work for it! Work for it!' while wiggling one singular dollar around,” Stormy said. “And guess what? If you say that to me, you're going to get an eye roll and you're not going to get the time of day. I'm not really sure why some of y'all decide to come into gentlemen's clubs where dancers can easily charge you $1,000+, $2,000+ per hour-long VIP room and think that a singular dollar is going to make us work for it. It's rude, and that's a time when I do feel it's slightly dehumanizing, so don't do that.”
Nightlife do's and don'ts
With the golden rule of tipping out of the way, Stormy proceeded to outline other do's and don'ts for prospective patrons of nightlife establishments like hers. She advised customers to adhere to the following behavioral norms: Don't name call, demean, curse at the dancers or talk down on their profession; don't come into the club if it's not a comfortable space; and don't grab at the dancers' clothes or bodies, regardless of tipping.
The last piece of advice also extends to the act of giving tips itself. Stormy doesn't just advise against invasive touching, but against sticking cash in the dancers' attire forcefully or inappropriately.
“Not a good feeling,” Stormy said. “We're people, okay? We're human beings. We all have our different and own boundaries.”

Is tipping mandatory when going to see nightlife dancers?
Reddit is littered with questions from would-be customers wondering what kind of cash they should be packing before heading out for the night, or whether they should tip at all.
There seems to be an overwhelming consensus among nightlife dancers and customers that tipping is not only customary, but culturally expected.
“In a lot of instances (the vast majority, actually) [nightlife dancers] are not employed by the club, but rather are independent contractors who are required to pay a large sum of money to the club daily as ‘rent,'” one Redditor explained. “It's [expletive] rude to watch a dancer at all if you don't have at least a buck or two to tip. If you're not tipping, you better be getting dances and/or private rooms to justify the behavior.”
Gentleman's club Oxnard also emphasized the importance of tipping “generously” on its website.
“If you're at a [nightlife establishment], tipping isn't optional; it's part of the culture,” the website said. “Showing appreciation with cash is the golden rule. Do tip generously during performances … Even a few dollars per song shows respect. Don't throw coins, fold money and attempt to place it somewhere inappropriate, or assume bottle service covers everything.”
