A Black New Yorker gets upgraded to business class on a domestic Delta flight. Then her seatmate asks what she does for a living, and her response has gone viral.

Tenicka B (@tenickab) shared her experience in a TikTok with over 715,900 views. Her video quickly gained attention after she responded to a microaggression with what she calls a “macroaggression”.

The creator identified herself as a Delta Diamond member. In the Delta Air Lines' SkyMiles loyalty program, the Delta Diamond bracket is the highest loyalty tier.

As a result, she had been upgraded to a front-row business class seat. Then she noticed the man next to her appearing to get increasingly agitated. His unease built until he questioned what she did for a living.

Tenicka had an epic response.

What did Tenicka tell her seatmate?

Feigning surprise, she asked, “Is this what they do on commercial flights?” She then followed up with, “Do you work here?”

Tenicka further indignantly explained that it was her first time flying commercial and was unaware that workers speak to passengers.

The TikToker then flashed her Birkin bag and flippantly demanded the man “put her bag up.” Perfectly playing off the image of someone expecting another person to handle their luggage.

Her point was to respond to what she perceived as a microaggression with an exaggerated display of status.

Tenicka claimed the interaction left the man stunned.

Why did viewers find it funny?

Viewers were bemused by her quick response.

One commenter, @TheyCallMeAngel, wrote, “I wish I was this quick-witted.”

Another, Keren, simply reacted to the Birkin reveal, writing, “Immediately flashes the Birkin,” adding laughing emojis.

Nana Ashanti joked, “Legend has it that he is still thinking about it till this day!”

The reactions suggest that viewers saw the encounter as less of a serious confrontation and more as a perfect response to a stranger's overstep.

What did other viewers say about microaggressions?

The conversation also expanded beyond the flight itself. Some commenters shared their own experiences with interactions they interpreted as microaggressions.

Microaggressions generally refer to subtle comments, questions, or behaviors that can communicate stereotypes or assumptions about someone based on their identity or background. However, whether a particular interaction qualifies can depend heavily on the context and the people involved.

In this case, Tenicka interpreted a simple question from her seatmate as something worth pushing back against. Her response intentionally exaggerated the situation. Turning the interaction into a joke about status, wealth, and who belongs in a particular space.

Have other passengers reported discrimination on Delta?

Black passengers have publicly described uncomfortable or discriminatory experiences while flying Delta.

In 2016, Dr. Tamika Cross, a Black OB-GYN, said she was aboard a Delta flight when a passenger became unresponsive. Cross said she tried to offer medical assistance but was initially dismissed by a flight attendant who allegedly told her they were looking for “actual physicians.” Cross said she eventually identified herself as a doctor and was even questioned about her credentials.

More recently, Teresa Hudson Jordan alleged in a 2025 federal lawsuit that she and her daughter were removed from a Delta flight after a flight attendant allegedly became confrontational with her. According to the complaint, Jordan said she had simply made eye contact with the attendant before the interaction escalated. 

Those incidents are considerably different from Tenicka's humorous story. Still, they help explain why some commenters may have connected her video to broader conversations about Black passengers being questioned, stereotyped, or treated differently while traveling.
