Oxygen’s new documentary series, Selena & Yolanda: The Secrets Between Them, explores the complex relationship between singer Selena Quintanilla and Yolanda Saldivar, her murderer.

Scheduled to debut with two back-to-back episodes on February 17, the series sparks outrage from the victim’s father by featuring the murderer.

Featuring exclusive interviews, the true crime series will examine the version of events given by Saldivar, the Saldivar family, Corpus Christi police detectives and prosecutors involved in the case. Never-before-seen documents and recordings are also included, to provide a full account of the events between Selena, Saldivar and their families.

Selena was at the height of her popularity when she suddenly lost it. Selena was considered one of Mexico’s most important artists, and was about to release her English album, Dreaming of You.

Jennifer Lopez played Selena in the 1997 film of the same name.

The upcoming documentary series, however, has stirred up a great deal of controversy. Abraham Quintanilla, Selena Quintanilla’s father, is adamantly opposed to the project. Abraham Quintanilla described all Saldivar’s statements as “lies”.

The family believes that Saldivar’s version of events cannot be trusted.
