A Walmart worker thought he was clocking in for an average day at work, until he noticed Pepsi delivered dozens of pallets of soda.

In a viral TikTok video with more than 141,900 views, Walmart worker Josiah (@mojo_jojo442) asked for clarity on why the store received such a large delivery of Pepsi products. He counted more than 27 pallets of drinks in the company's backroom. There were more that employees had already processed.

“Pepsi or Walmart got to explain the [expletive] that's going on,” Josiah said.

There were products from Dr Pepper, Pepsi, and Mountain Dew, alongside beers and other drinks that Josiah said were from the vendors. The quantity of beverages seemed to surprise Josiah, who captioned his video: “What tf are we supposed to do with this?”

Why did viewers think Walmart was getting so many sodas?

In the video's comment section, many people offered up theories on why the store received such a large delivery.

Some believed it had something to do with a change in the system soda companies use for orders.

“Pepsi got a new push ordering system and the vendors can't edit it,” a commenter wrote.

“I was told this morning coke is using AI to do orders,” one person commented.

Others said that the large order may be in anticipation of the summer and upcoming holidays.

“Because summer is coming up 4th of July etc,” one person said.

“It's summer time bruh,” another person wrote.

Another worker said she noticed the same thing at her store.

“It's a daily battle at our store, we are basically a Pepsi warehouse,” she said.

How does Walmart buy its merchandise?

According to Walmart's website, it has a large number of suppliers to meet the needs of millions of customers. The company depends on large, medium, and small suppliers and constantly seeks new vendors.

Multiple threads on Reddit have attempted to shed light on Walmart's process.

According to a Reddit post, Walmart has an automated supply chain system that places orders automatically depending on the store's demand.

“On top of that, even the stores ordering is automated. POs are generated automatically and ordered based on what sold that day, then sent to the vendor,” one person wrote.

Another person on the same thread described working in retail and compared it to Walmart. “Every week we'd get swamped with more and more of the same product, WAY more than what gets sold,” they said. “It'd be ridiculous because we get an order for one item fulfill 2 weeks worths of sales then 4 days later we get another weeks worth.”

Do people drink more soda in the summertime?

The other theory that the store increased its beverage quantity in anticipation of the summer may have merit.

According to one study, Americans tend to increase their consumption of soda and other sugary drinks as temperatures rise.

Researchers tracked the grocery store receipts of Americans and noted warm weather increases the likelihood that consumers will reach for sodas, energy drinks, and sweetened juice.

This change in behavior is attributed to the fact that these drinks taste refreshing, especially when it's warm out. There are also more events such as beach parties, BBQs, and pool days where cold, sweet beverages are more likely to be consumed.

While this may not be a direct explanation for the increase in sodas at Josiah's Walmart store, it may account for some of the extra pallets the content creator noticed.
