Who is Victoria Mboko, Canada’s new tennis sensation?

Of Congolese origin, Mboko is the youngest of four children, born on August 26, 2006 (age 18) in Charlotte, North Carolina.

Although born in the U.S., Vicky grew up in Toronto, Ontario, and identifies herself as a Canadian.

The right-hander made her official WTA Tour debut in August 2022, losing in the first round of the WTA 250 tournament to Rebecca Marino.

She reached the third round of this year’s French internationals, her best ever result in a Grand Slam tournament.

Mboko defeated the world’s second-ranked racket, in Coco Gauff, at this summer’s Montreal tournament.

Mboko had a sensational run in Montreal, beating Naomi Osaka in the grand final, disposing of her in three sets of 2-6, 6-4 and 6-1.

The Toronto native has had several role models in her young career, but former world number one Naomi Osaka is her greatest idol.

Victoria was ranked 85th in the world prior to the Montreal event, and is now 24th, her highest WTA ranking.

According to the WTA website, Mboko has earned around $1.195 million (US) in her young career, including a reported $752,275 (US) from her recent win.

Victoria Mboko has shown great promise during her time in Montreal, and could well become the next star of Canadian tennis. Could she even become the best Canadian player of all time? Time will tell!
