Woman orders triple shot of Patrón. Then a Marriott manager calls the hotel, and a customer plays vigilante

Having a customer dine-and-dash often leads to servers, bartenders, and other hospitality industry workers “eating the bill.” It's often too late to track down the guest once they've walked out a door, and most of the time, restaurants and bars aren't able to catch a name to report to law enforcement.

But what happens when a customer at a bar takes matters into their own hands? Nk (@noname81631), who works at a hotel bar, shared a story of a situation with an apparent scammer and a vigilante customer. As of this writing, the content creator's post has more than 13,000 views.

A burger, a triple shot of Patrón, and a strawberry shortcake

Nk said that a woman came up to the bar and ordered a burger, a triple shot of Patrón tequila, and a strawberry shortcake to go. But Nk had trouble taking her order.

“She's on the phone the whole time that she's ordering and I'm trying to talk to her, so it's, like, kinda hard to talk to her,” Nk said. “ Every time I ask her a question, she's really, like, frantic and answers me and then, like, goes back to her phone call.”

Nk tried to ask the customer what her room number was, but the woman didn't say. Regardless, Nk put the order in and gave the customer her food. Everything went well, and eventually, Nk gave the woman a check.

At first, Nk presumed that the woman wrote her room number and information on the check. The customer even claimed that she gave Nk a “really nice tip.” But then Nk's manager walked over and asked a few questions.

An unpaid balance

Nk's manager wanted to know whether the woman actually paid for her food.

“My manager comes up, and she's like, ‘Hey, did that girl pay for her food?' I said, ‘Yeah, of course. Like, I have her, I have her bill right here, room number, whatever.' … She said, ‘That's not her room number,'” Nk explained.

According to Nk's manager, a nearby Marriott location had a chance encounter with the same woman. She allegedly bought food, pretended to leave her information, and walked off without actually paying. The Marriott called Nk's hotel to let them know about the situation.

Nk's manager said that the woman managed to rack up a $300 bill at the Marriott.

Upon realizing the issue, the pair went outside to try to track the woman down. They figured she might still be in the area. But unfortunately, she was nowhere to be found.

Nk thought that they'd have to “eat the bill” when they came back inside the hotel. Luckily, a man from the valet service walked through the door. He told Nk that someone saw the woman down the street.

Then there was another issue. Nk said their manager was ill-suited for confrontation. Nk didn't want to confront the woman, either.

That's when a man who was sitting across the bar gave them a solution.

A vigilante story

Nk said that a customer offered to track the woman down. Or rather, that he simply did it without permission.

“The guy sitting across from me at the bar, he's just drinking his beer. He's been chilling the whole time, but he's heard the whole story. He goes, ‘One second. I can do something.' He's in flip-flops, mind you. He runs out the door,” Nk said.

Around 10 minutes later, the hotel got an update from him.

“Front desk is calling … us … and they're like, ‘Hey, your customer's on the phone.' I get on the phone. I'm like, ‘Are you okay?' He's like, ‘Yeah. I have eyes on her. She's at the bus stop. Like, what do you want me to do?'” Nk said.

Nk didn't know what to tell him, so the customer said he'd call the police. He added that he'd tell law enforcement to hustle, but there was no promise of an arrest. The woman would probably get on her bus and be gone by the time anyone arrived.

Around 10 minutes later, Nk said the man returned to finish drinking his beer. It's unclear based on Nk's story whether the woman was arrested, although they said law enforcement was little help. For his efforts, Nk gave him two free shots of  absinthe.

The effect of a dine-and-dash

While dine-and-dashing isn't necessarily common, it can have disastrous effects, especially for small businesses. Costs for restaurants have skyrocketed in the 2020s. The National Restaurant Association estimates that “Average hourly earnings of restaurant employees jumped 41% from pre-pandemic levels, while average wholesale food prices were up 35%.”

A dine-and-dash scheme, then, can severely negatively impact a business that's already covering expensive overheads.

In other situations, servers are forced to pay out of pocket to cover dine-and-dashing, even though the Department of Labor says such deductions from employees' checks are illegal.

Dine-and-dashing is often a serial offense, and dashers can run up expensive tabs. Fox News reported on a California dine-and-dasher who made off with “approximately $1,000 worth of meals from multiple locations.” The man was arrested after dining at a Sushi Confidential location.
