Woman says her ex-boyfriend was scammed by the San Francisco 49ers scammer. How did he fall for this?

Online dating has made it easier than ever to meet someone new. It's also made it easier to lie about who you are. From fake A-list actors to fake royalty, catfishing scams are positively thriving in the new normal.

One woman says she had a front-row seat to one of these scammers, years before the scammer made headlines. She claimed her own ex-boyfriend was one of his original victims.

‘I think I got scammed by this guy'

Actress Wasé Chief (@wwwwase) shared a story about her ex-boyfriend. In it, she said he was scammed by a man posing as an NFL player. Her video has since accumulated more than 60,000 views.

Chief said the incident happened back around 2020, while she was still living with her ex-boyfriend. When news and photos started circulating of a man posing as a player for the San Francisco 49ers, she realized he looked “really familiar.”

“Then it dawned on me that this is the guy who scammed my ex-boyfriend,” Chief said. “I remember [my boyfriend] was really stressed out … every time he'd look at his phone. And then he was like, ‘I think I got scammed by this guy' … and it was that guy. Daejon Love.”

Chief said that back in the day, Love told her then-boyfriend he needed help paying his daughter's medical bills. Her boyfriend believed Love would pay him back. However, he began to get nervous when Love's social media became littered with “all these nice cars and all these nice watches.” Throughout that time, the money never showed.

“I don't even know if he has a daughter in real life,” Chief said. She told her then-boyfriend, “Obviously, these cars aren't his, because otherwise, he wouldn't be asking to borrow money from you, a random person.”

Chief later reached out to her ex and confirmed that Love is the same man who scammed him.

“I guess they're gonna need to change the headline to how he scammed 26 women and my ex-boyfriend.”

Who exactly is the 49ers scammer?

Daejon Labrayae Love is a 35-year-old man who does not play for the San Francisco 49ers. According to the U.S. Attorney's Office, he was arrested on Aug. 24, 2026 alongside an alleged accomplice, 18-year-old Taylor Jamie Chan.

The DOJ reports that Love posed online as a wealthy San Francisco 49ers player and real estate investor. He used these personas to pursue romantic relationships with dozens of women he met on dating apps, while Chan “falsely posed as Love's financial adviser to further gain their victims' trust and demonstrate the validity of the investments.”

Love ran this scam from February 2022 until the day of the arrests. He defrauded victims across Oregon, Washington, Idaho and California out of more than $1.3 million.

Chief's account, if true, would mean that Love was allegedly running a scheme two years prior to when the DOJ's report states he began.

NBC News reported that Love “convinced victims they were in sincere romantic relationships with him, that he was a sophisticated investor and that Chan was his ‘investment adviser,' who helped Love to grow a fortune of tens of millions of dollars.”

CBS News also reported that Love and Chan “hosted FaceTime calls, showing victims falsified investment gains and encouraged them to part with their money.” Love cut off contact with victims once their money ran out or they began asking too many questions.
