Woman serves table of teens. They start talking about her in another language—one she knows how to speak
Every server has at least one experience with a table that seemingly talks about them when they're not around; whether that be a couple mindlessly making quips before suddenly getting a little too quiet, a big family with rowdy kids who openly discuss the service, or, in one woman's case, a table of teens that resort to speaking another language to make side comments.
Bel (@khaibellamy) discussed her experience working with a table that openly discussed her service in French. Only Bel speaks the language.
As of this writing, her post has more than 371,000 views.
Bel's Table of French-Speaking Teens
Bel said a table of 15-year-olds celebrating a birthday walked through the door. She compared the experience of serving teens to that of “serving a mosh pit.” In other words, she was not expecting to have a good time.
She went ahead and served the table “food and dignity,” as one does. Everything seemed fine. But at one point, one of the boys at the table asked Bel to come over. At first, she didn't hear him. He called again, and she eventually made her way toward the table.
Bel heard the boy make a comment to his group of friends. According to her, he said, “Je pense qu'elle est un peu sourde.” Bel went ahead and translated the phrase for her audience.
“ Meaning, ‘I think she's a little deaf,'” she said. “We're laughing. We're laughing. Can I tell a joke? What's not gonna get a tip but is gonna give a tip tonight? A waitress who speaks French.”
She fired back and said, “Non, je ne suis pas.” Then she was met with palpable silence.
“You would've thought I hit a gong,” she said. “ And now I got … 15-year-olds blinking up at me in French, and I figure I have just emerged from the cake, [so] I might as well put the cherry on top … I look at them, and I go, ‘Vous parlez français? Bien, je peux vous servir en français si vous préférez.” In short, she asked the table if they'd prefer she speak French from then on.
“The next time that you wanna entertain your little friends at my expense by switching languages, I get to go next,” she said.
Commenters Say the Table Learned a Lesson
Commenters slammed the teens for assuming that their server didn't speak French.
One viewer, for instance, said, “Almost like French is in the top ten [spoken languages] in the world and they shouldn't feel so comfortable talking about people [out loud].”
They're correct in saying that French is one of the most spoken languages in the world. As of 2026, there are 29 countries that have French as their national or official language.
Another commenter said, “Every single one of those kids gave their friend the most [expletive] possibly for days after this.
@khaibellamy Everyone suddenly got a lot friendlier
A few viewers asked whether she received a tip. But others focused more on the situation and the tip the boys at the table inadvertently received.
“[The] best tip those kids are ever going to get,” a viewer said.
