A woman purchased a $1,500 Purple mattress. Then nearly three years later, she used a heating pad on it, resulting in disastrous consequences.

TikToker @mamasneaks3, who normally posts “millennial mom finds,” noticed a large divot in her mattress. When she fully examined her mattress, she realized that a heating pad had flattened and completely melted a section of the gel mattress she purchased. She then posted a video of the melted-out crater, which received more than 26.5 million views.

Purple disaster

The mattress had a very clear melted section, which Mamasneaks3 showed in her viral video.

“So this is what happened to our $1,500 Purple mattress from using a heating pad,” Mamasneaks3 said. She moved her camera closer to the divot for her audience to fully see the flattened, softened section of her Purple grid.

“Just thought… I'd share with everyone,” the creator said.

The content creator explained in her comment section that she was using a normal heating pad rather than a malfunctioning one. She also mentioned that the mattress was nearly three years old, which was within Purple's warranty period. The company reserves the right to refuse to replace or repair products, although it may issue some form of compensation if Mamasneaks3 used her heating pad correctly near the product.

Mamasneaks3 did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

The science behind Purple's GelFlex tech

Purple's patented GelFlex Grid comes from a proprietary Hyper-Elastic Polymer, along with other materials inside the grid.

Multiple commenters mentioned that the mattress contained plastics, which is technically true. Thermoplastics are plastics that typically soften when heated and harden when cooled. When a moderate amount of heat is applied to a thermoplastic, it may soften and take on a brand new shape, similar to what Mamasneaks3 witnessed.

Purple mattresses use silica, which is naturally flame resistant. All mattresses manufactured in the United States have to meet certain fire safety standards, according to Eachnight. Purple mattresses are not necessarily flammable or dangerous, but they can, based on Mamasneaks3's experience, melt.

‘Were you grilling steak…?'

Mamasneaks3 clarified in her comment section that she used the heating pad correctly. Despite this, multiple viewers joked about the situation. Some humorously asked if there was something wrong with her heating pad and whether it was from another world. A few included photos of molten landscapes, referencing the pad and its supposed temperature.

“Were you grilling steak on that heating pad!?!” one person wrote.

Others sarcastically joked that Mamasneaks3 seemed surprised by the fact that “heat melts plastic.”

“Silicone melts under heat huh? Who would've thought,” another viewer added.

Some TikTokers understood the point of her video. One posted a comment, saying, “[I] think she's showing y'all so you don't make the same mistake. Also I think if you're spending 1500 you should be able to use a friggin heating pad. Idk why people are being rude.”

Mamasneaks3 replied, “So sweet thank you.”
