Not surprisingly, the special prosecutor won approval from U.S. District Court Judge Tanya Chutkan for his request to drop all federal charges against Donald Trump.
All federal charges
Special prosecutor Jack Smith won approval from U.S. District Court Judge Tanya Chutkan for his request to drop all federal charges against Donald Trump, future president-elect.
Inappropriate management
The charges concerned two major matters: the improper handling of classified documents found at his Mar-a-Lago residence, as well as his attempts to subvert the 2020 presidential election, after his defeat by Joe Biden.
The Court of Appeals
One of the major cases against Trump is currently being considered by the U.S. Court of Appeals for the 11th Circuit, following a request by Jack Smith. This follows the dismissal of the case by District Judge Aileen Cannon earlier this summer, who ruled that the appointment of the special prosecutor was illegal. In addition, the Court of Appeals has agreed to withdraw Jack Smith’s request.
37 counts of indictment
Recall that Donald Trump was indicted in June 2023 in a Miami federal court, facing 37 criminal counts.
At Mar-a-Lago
These charges relate to the improper handling of classified documents found at Mar-a-Lago, his Florida residence, and his refusal to return them at the FBI’s request.
Obstructing justice
Charges against Trump in this case included willful withholding of national defense information, falsifying statements and conspiracy to obstruct justice.
Election results
Jack Smith’s other case against Trump involved charges that he illegally conspired to overturn the results of the 2020 election.
Conspiracy
Charges included conspiracy to defraud the United States, conspiracy to obstruct an official proceeding, obstructing and attempting to obstruct an official proceeding.
A Supreme Court decision
The cases against Trump have been significantly affected by a Supreme Court decision, which held that Trump enjoyed presidential immunity for any action taken in the course of his duties.
Readjusting the charges
Before Trump won the 2024 election, Jack Smith was working to readjust the charges to reflect this new perspective.
Taking office
Special Prosecutor Jack Smith and his team will resign before Trump takes office in the White House. Trump has said he will fire Smith as soon as he takes office.
