Germany massively increases its military aid to Ukraine

According to the Ukrainian media outlet The Kyiv Independent, Germany is the largest military donor to Ukraine in Europe, and the second largest in the world, behind the United States.

In February 2022, in the face of the Russo-Ukrainian conflict that threatened the entire post-war European order, Berlin set aside its long-standing policy blocking the delivery of lethal weapons to conflict zones.

Germany had originally allocated about four billion euros in defense aid for Ukraine in 2025. According to The Kyiv Independent, former German Chancellor Olaf Scholz had refused to increase this amount by three billion euros, but his successor, Friedrich Merz, has committed to advancing the project.

According to Toute l’Europe, a site dedicated to education about the European Union, “Germany has provided 17.26 billion euros in aid since February 2022, compared to 8.05 billion for Denmark, 7.33 billion for the Netherlands, 5.4 billion euros for Sweden, or 4.89 billion for France.”

According to the British think tank Royal United Services Institute, 20% of Ukraine’s arsenal comes from the United States, a percentage that was higher at the beginning of the conflict, compared to 25% from Europe.

The American contribution to the Ukrainian arsenal could indeed increase. On March 11, American President Donald Trump announced the resumption of military aid and intelligence sharing with Ukraine.

More specifically, the new shipment from Germany includes 24 mine-resistant ambush-protected vehicles (MRAP) as well as three self-propelled GEPARD anti-aircraft guns with 10,000 rounds of ammunition for them, reports The Kyiv Independent.

This delivery includes 5,000 rounds of 155 mm artillery shells, 2,000 rounds of 122 mm shells, and 8,000 rounds of 120 mm mortar shells. It also includes ammunition for Leopard 1 tanks, Marder infantry fighting vehicles, and IRIS-T air defense systems.

Ukraine has also received 50 Vector reconnaissance drones, 30 Gereon RCS tracked drones, and 30 drone detection systems.
