The analysis has only just begun and the election is still many days away, but it was a good night for Kamala Harris.
A Swift support after the debate
Kamala Harris prosecuted Donald Trump at the ABC presidential debate and, in the process, finally convinced Taylor Swift to offer her official public support.
A turning point
It was on Instagram that Taylor Swift decided to officially get involved in the election, which isn’t a first, but the debate was certainly a turning point for her. She also took the opportunity to reply to Donald Trump’s running mate JD Vance’s references to childless cat ladies, pointing out… that she herself is one.
Trapped and tricked
A small victory for Kamala Harris, however, compared to the one she achieved against Trump during the debate, when the current Vice-President of the United States dominated and often trapped and tricked her opponent.
One big night
Kamala Harris, who vastly outperformed her rival Donald Trump, therefore won the debate and Taylor Swift’s support in one single night.
Flattery and favors
From the start of the debate, Harris quickly put Trump on the defensive by introducing herself and shaking his hand. In less than 30 minutes, the debate took a turn, as Trump began to advance false claims in a bid to shock and frighten his supporters, including about some states performing abortions after birth. He also claimed that Putin would never have invaded Ukraine had he been president, while Kamala Harris explained to the audience the importance of not letting Putin take over Ukraine, and then the rest of Europe, continuing with Poland. She also pointed out that Trump was easily manipulated by dictators, saying they could fool him with flattery and favors.
World leaders
Harris also claimed world leaders are laughing at him. In response, Trump cited Viktor Orbán, the Hungarian Prime Minister, known for restricting press freedom, weakening judicial independence and undermining democracy since his election in 2010. According to Trump, Orbán called Trump “the most respected and feared person.”
Conspiracy theories
Although Trump is trying to shake off the “weird” label attributed to him and his running mate J.D. Vance, his remarks that evening revealed conspiracy theories and racist statements. He claimed before an audience of millions that Haitian immigrants in Springfield, Ohio, were eating residents’ pets, declaring, “They eat the dogs. They eat the cats. They eat the pets of the people who live there.” This claim required fact-checking by ABC News moderator David Muir.
Fired by 81 million voters
Kamala Harris also questioned Trump’s continued refusal to accept the 2020 election results despite the court’s rulings. When Trump claimed that Democrats were trying to get illegal immigrants to vote, who, of course, have no right to vote in the U.S., Harris countered by pointing out the lack of discernment and ability to distinguish facts. She also pointed out that Trump had been fired by 81 million voters and was having trouble accepting that reality.
A second debate?
As soon as the debate ended, with Kamala unequivocally declared the winner, her camp immediately called for a second debate before the election. Trump, for his part, responded the next day on Fox and Friends that he was less inclined to agree, claiming to have had an excellent evening and even declaring himself the winner.
