The three main press advocacy organizations denounce a rise in violence against journalists and demand impartial investigations to ensure justice is served.
A record number
2024 was the deadliest year for journalists, with a record number of reported deaths worldwide.
Committee to Protect Journalists
The Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ) has documented 124 journalists killed, including 70% during the conflict between Israel and Gaza.
Reporters Without Borders
Reporters Without Borders (RSF) estimates this number at 54 journalists killed, with one third of the deaths attributed to the Israeli army.
International Federation of Journalists
The International Federation of Journalists (IFJ) reports a total of 104 journalists killed, more than half of them in Gaza.
The assessments
These discrepancies in the assessments are explained by distinct counting methodologies.
CPJ & IFJ
Some organizations, like the CPJ, focus solely on journalists killed directly because of their work, while others, like the IFJ, also include deaths occurring under unconfirmed circumstances, such as targeted attacks or accidents in conflict zones.
2012
Before 2024, the deadliest year for journalists was 2012, mainly due to the war in Syria, with 67 deaths recorded by the Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ).
Targeted
Many reporters had been targeted while covering the clashes between regime forces and rebel groups.
Several journalists assassinated
In 2024, several journalists were assassinated outside of war zones due to their investigations into corruption and organized crime.
Luis Martín Sánchez
Notably, Luis Martín Sánchez, correspondent for La Jornada in Mexico, was found dead after covering cases involving drug cartels.
The degradation
Press advocacy organizations warn about the degradation of security conditions for journalists and point out a lack of impartiality in investigations concerning them.
