The suspect in the murder of UnitedHealthcare’s CEO has been transferred to New York after being charged with 11 counts, including first-degree murder in connection with an act of terrorism.
December 9th
Luigi Mangione was arrested in Pennsylvania on December 9 after being recognized by a McDonald’s employee.
The manhunt
He was the target of a manhunt by authorities in connection with the investigation into the murder of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson on December 4 in Midtown Manhattan.
A Pennsylvania court
The 26-year-old suspect appeared in a Pennsylvania court on charges of forgery and illegal possession of firearms, before dropping objections to his extradition to New York.
Heavy police presence
Mangione was transferred to New York aboard a helicopter, under heavy police escort.
Written documents
According to the authorities and a recently unsealed complaint, federal prosecutors used Luigi Mangione’s writings as evidence.
For months
These documents, including notes in his notebook and a letter he wrote, suggest that he had been planning the alleged attack on UnitedHealthcare’s CEO for months.
New York federal courthouse
Mangione was then transported to the New York federal courthouse for his arraignment.
New charges
He was indicted on new federal charges, including murder with the use of a firearm, two counts of stalking and an additional weapons offense.
Act of terrorism
These charges are in addition to those of first-degree murder in connection with an act of terrorism, two counts of second-degree murder, one of which also qualifies as an act of terrorism, and several weapons offences.
A federal prison
Mangione was finally transferred to what will be his destination for a long time to come: a federal prison in Brooklyn, the same as Sean Diddy Combs.
January 18th
Mangione is due to appear again in federal court for a preliminary hearing on January 18.
