Mexico gets a one-month reprieve on tariffs

This contingent of the Mexican National Guard aims to combat drug trafficking, particularly fentanyl, as well as illegal migrants.

In exchange, the United States commits to preventing high-powered arms trafficking to Mexico, Mr. Sheinbaum announced on his X account.

The American president has also stated that during this tariff freeze, negotiations will be conducted by Secretary of State Marco Rubio, Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent, Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick, as well as high-level representatives from Mexico.

He added that he is “eager” to participate in these discussions with Ms. Sheinbaum in order to reach an agreement between the two countries.

The tariffs on imports from Mexico, Canada, and China were originally set to go into effect on Tuesday.

This measure targeting the three main trading partners of the United States has caused a shockwave in the North American economy. However, the new agreement with Mexico has allowed the stock market to recover.

Mr. Trudeau announced on Saturday evening that if the United States implemented these tariffs, Canada would respond by imposing a 25% tax on 155 billion Canadian dollars of American products.

However, following a negotiation on Monday evening, American President Donald Trump and Prime Minister Justin Trudeau agreed to postpone the application of tariffs on Canadian products for at least thirty days.
