Mexico wants to sue Google if it does not restore the name of the Gulf of Mexico

Mexico is considering suing Google if the platform continues to display «Gulf of America» instead of «Gulf of Mexico» across the entire body of water, for users in both the United States and the rest of the world.

The President of Mexico, Claudia Sheinbaum, denounced this amendment, stating that Donald Trump’s decree only applies to the part of the continental shelf under American jurisdiction.

According to Sheinbaum, renaming the entire Gulf is a mistake because Trump only had authority over the 22 nautical miles of the United States’ continental shelf.

Last week, Google justified this change by explaining that it follows the official updates from government sources. However, in Mexico, the map still displays «Gulf of Mexico».

The Mexican president has already threatened Google with legal action, calling the modification a “misleading designation” that exceeds the scope of the American decree.

During a press conference, Sheinbaum read Google’s response, which confirms that Mexican users will still see «Gulf of Mexico», while American users will see «Gulf of America».

Sheinbaum reminded that all other countries see the two names displayed simultaneously, an approach that does not satisfy Mexico.

The Mexican government has sent a new letter to Google, insisting that any mention of «Gulf of America» must be strictly limited to the area under American jurisdiction.

The letter specifies that any change beyond this limit exceeds the authority of any government or private company and could lead to legal actions.

Sheinbaum emphasized that Mexico will wait for Google’s response before initiating legal proceedings.

This conflict arises in a climate of growing tensions between the Trump administration and several allied nations, exacerbated by his provocative statements. Mexico is also facing a trade war due to the tariffs imposed by Trump.
