The Russian captain of the cargo ship involved in the collision with an American ship arrested

The Russian captain of the container ship Solong, involved in a collision with the American tanker Stena Immaculate in the North Sea, has been arrested by the British police. 

A 59-year-old man of Russian nationality, suspected of involuntary manslaughter due to gross negligence, has been placed in custody. 

Investigators are trying to determine whether navigation error is to blame or if the captain was under the influence of alcohol, drugs, or motivated by some other reason.

Recall that on March 10, a spectacular collision occurred in the North Sea between the tanker Stena Immaculate, flying the American flag, and the cargo ship Solong, under the Liberian flag but operated by a Russian company. 

The accident occurred off the coast of Yorkshire, under apparently normal weather conditions, raising questions about the responsibilities involved.

The Stena Immaculate was transporting a cargo of kerosene intended for the American military. Following the collision, a breach formed in its hull, causing a fuel leak into the sea. 

The British and Dutch authorities have immediately implemented enhanced surveillance to limit the spread of the pollutant and prevent an ecological disaster.

The collision between the two ships triggered a fire that required several hours of intervention to be brought under control. 

Specialized maritime firefighters were mobilized to extinguish the flames, while the coast guard coordinated the evacuation operations of injured sailors.

A crew member of the Stena Immaculate lost their life in the accident, which has accelerated the opening of an investigation to determine any potential criminal negligence. Initial reports suggest that the Russian cargo ship veered off its course in a mysterious manner before the impact.

Maritime navigation experts note that the collision could have been avoided if safety protocols had been followed. Some analysts suggest the hypothesis of sabotage or a deliberate act aimed at disrupting energy flows in the region. This hypothesis is bolstered by the increase in maritime incidents involving vessels linked to Russia.

This accident occurs in a tense geopolitical climate between the West and Russia. In recent months, several merchant ships and oil tankers have been victims of suspicious incidents in the Baltic Sea and the North Sea, raising fears of a Russian strategy to disrupt Western trade flows.

In December 2024, a Swedish cargo ship carrying natural gas exploded off the coast of Denmark, raising suspicions of sabotage. In January 2025, a Norwegian oil tanker mysteriously caught fire in the Baltic Sea after a suspicious collision with an unknown vessel.

Recent acts of sabotage targeting underwater internet cables in the Baltic Sea have on several occasions been attributed to Russian actors, disrupting communications and strategic infrastructure. These events occur within a climate of rising tensions between Moscow and the West, increasing suspicions of destabilization operations.
